Cali

Cali stepped out of the shower and wiped her hand over the foggy glass to check her reflection. Her eyes were turning red again, but before she could fret about it Wes walked up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist, caressing the smooth plane of her stomach.

“I’m not used to this yet,” he murmured.

“Me either,” she replied, linking her fingers with his.

Only a few days ago she’d had a large round belly that carried her daughter safely with her. The abruptness in which Violet had entered the world hadn’t given Cali a chance to adjust in the normal ways. All at once she was fit and trim, though the strange emptiness of where Violet had once been remained, almost amplified thanks to her vampire senses. She felt everything with acute precision these days. Especially right after she fed.

Wes kissed the faint bite mark he’d left on Cali’s shoulder, drawing her attention to the thready flutter she’d felt in her chest ever since. Slowly, she drew Wes’s hand from her stomach to her chest, pressing it against the rapid beat. She watched his eyes widen in the mirror.

“What is that?”

Cali bit her bottom lip. “I think it’s my heart.”

“But you’re a vampire, your heart is dead.”

“I know, but my wolf’s not. Maybe it’s her heartbeat I feel. I mean she’s still strong. I’ve already shifted once since Malcolm brought me back and now, since you reclaimed me,” she said massaging the fading bite mark, “I feel stronger somehow.”

Wes turned her toward him and scooped her up, setting her on the edge of the sink, spreading her knees so he could move closer. He brushed her hair back, searching her eyes. “I don’t know what this is, but I feel it too,” he said bringing her hand to his own powerful heartbeat.

Cali’s eyes darted to the bite mark she’d left on his shoulder. “Do you think it’s the mating bond? I mean can we . . . re-mate?”

He gave her a mischievous grin. “Not without letting our wolves get involved, which could easily be arranged,” he added pressing his eager length against her.

Cali grinned, kissing her ever-willing husband. “I’d say yes but I think we’ve already destroyed most of the bedroom. We should probably leave the bathroom intact.”

Wes chuckled, his voice low and deep as it rumbled through her. “Fine, but you’d better get dressed, woman, because staring at your nakedness is giving me wicked ideas.”

Cali laughed and hopped down off the sink, following Wes into the demolished bedroom. “Damn,” she murmured. “We’re gonna have to buy Etti some new furniture.”

Wes rolled his eyes. “Didn’t you hear? Etti’s married to shifter royalty. They can afford to replace it themselves.”

Cali huffed a laugh. It would definitely take some getting used to—Grey being the long-lost Alpha heir. Normally, Cali didn’t put much stock in myths and legends, but she’d seen the way the packs of wolves regarded his orders today. They more than believed he would be their savior in the brewing war between the supernaturals.
